narrative theories

1) Todorov-argues that every narrative has an Equilibrium where everything is calm and normal then a Disequilibrium where everything is disrupted for the main character. At the end, he says it goes back to New Equilibrium where everything is normal again or order has been restored.

Todorov- The types main parts in the movie is the beginning, middle, and the end.I can apply this to Moana because equilibrium everything is calm
trailer, dancing pacific island life, kids playing ,setting is a lovely beach +jungle disequilibrium-storm coming, lighting, volcano Moana goes on a mission to get help.all the dangers and adventures.new equilibrium-dont see ending but from poster and genre we can assume happy ending, mission successful,Moana save her people.

2) Propp argues that every narrative has a number of stock characters who all act a certain way. I can apply this to Moana because:

Protagonist- Moana because she is a girl but she is still the hero and she is very brave to save her village.

Antagonist- Tamatoa because he is trying to stop Moana and maui from saving moana village and he has stole maui stick that help him turn into anything else.

Heroine- The village (People who live there because she is doing it for them)

Father- Moana's Grandmother who is her role model and helps shape the way she lives her life.

Helper- Maui (sidekick) as he is powerful but he helps her on her mission and is a friend to her. He takes orders from her at times which provides the audience with comedy.

Doner- The Sea as the sea reacts to Moana by helping cause waves when she needs it to and giving powers.

3) Barthes argues that every film is made up of Engima codes (questions that you ask) and Action Codes (where the audience gets a hint of action that will happen in the film). In the trailer for Moana, Enigma codes are: will she save the village? Will she become successful in her mission to defeat the villain? How will she do it?
Action codes are: when the monster threatens the village this makes us realise she will have to fight it at the end.
