narrative theories

1) Todorov-argues that every narrative has an Equilibrium where everything is calm and normal then a Disequilibrium where everything is disrupted for the main character. At the end, he says it goes back to New Equilibrium where everything is normal again or order has been restored.

Todorov- The types main parts in the movie is the beginning, middle, and the end.I can apply this to Moana because equilibrium everything is calm
trailer, dancing pacific island life, kids playing ,setting is a lovely beach +jungle disequilibrium-storm coming, lighting, volcano Moana goes on a mission to get help.all the dangers and adventures.new equilibrium-dont see ending but from poster and genre we can assume happy ending, mission successful,Moana save her people.

2) Propp argues that every narrative has a number of stock characters who all act a certain way. I can apply this to Moana because:

Protagonist- Moana because she is a girl but she is still the hero and she is very brave to save her village.

Antagonist- Tamatoa because he is trying to stop Moana and maui from saving moana village and he has stole maui stick that help him turn into anything else.

Heroine- The village (People who live there because she is doing it for them)

Father- Moana's Grandmother who is her role model and helps shape the way she lives her life.

Helper- Maui (sidekick) as he is powerful but he helps her on her mission and is a friend to her. He takes orders from her at times which provides the audience with comedy.

Doner- The Sea as the sea reacts to Moana by helping cause waves when she needs it to and giving powers.

3) Barthes argues that every film is made up of Engima codes (questions that you ask) and Action Codes (where the audience gets a hint of action that will happen in the film). In the trailer for Moana, Enigma codes are: will she save the village? Will she become successful in her mission to defeat the villain? How will she do it?
Action codes are: when the monster threatens the village this makes us realise she will have to fight it at the end.

representation

Moana
·                     How are women represented in the film trailer? Use specific examples from the trailer to support your points. How is she subversive (unexpected)
·                     How are young people represented in the film trailer (eg tough, independent, feisty)
·                     How are men represented in the trailer? Is this a typical representation for Disney films?

·                     How are Pacific Islanders represented? Is the representation fair? Accurate? Does this reinforce or subvert stereotypical representations of race/ethnicity in Hollywood film?

In Moana, women are represented in a subversive way because Moana is the hero in an action driven plot. Conventionally, most action heroes are male, white, American who commit brave actions and save the female love interest. Moana is subversive to this because she is trying to save her family and friends. Moana is playing the role of the hero in this film.

In Moana, young people are represented tough people they are not scared to take on a mission and save their people and they are represented independent people who wanna do everything alone and doesnt want anyone to help them because they are brave enough to do it themselves.

LR2

This year what i found interesting about media this year is when we were learning about different camera shots and i really liked when we were doing the fruit bowl it was really fun.Something i have found difficult is the Photoshop because there are so many thing to choose from

Blog feedback

WWW
1)            The storyboard shows a good range of camera shots and you have written what you have included in each one although you could add more about how this makes your audience feel eg establishing shots to show the setting and close ups to show the emotion of the person in the shot. You have simply stated what is in the shot you have chosen.
2)            Your audience profile sheet and fruit bowl task show that you have the potential to be good at Photoshop which is encouraging for your upcoming coursework.

EBI
1)            Please concentrate on making the work that goes on your blog your BEST possible work. That means not rushing it and taking your time and also finishing things off in Media after school or at home. You need to try and use more media language and you can only do this if you have your notebook open at all times when working on your blog so that you can remind yourself of what key words (such as demographic and connotation) mean.
2)            You are missing A GREAT DEAL of work from your blog – see above where I have highlighted what is missing or unfinished. This is simply not good enough and risks whether or not you should continue with GCSE Media Studies. I know that you had two blogs at one time so you might need to check they are all in the same place but there is a HIGE AMOUNT of missing work. Please publish anything that is in draft form so that I can see it. Anything that is not finished in class HAS to be finished for homework and posted up or you will be in Media detention every day until you are up to date. You will also be unable to participate in the Photo Shoot if you have not caught up.

Learner Response
1)            Copy and paste the above WWW and EBI into a new blog post entitled ‘Responding to Blog Feedback’
2)            Please finish all work that is not finished and publish it.
3)            Write a paragraph telling me what you have found interesting so far in Media and what has been your favourite task. What do you think you have done well in?
4)            Write a paragraph telling me what you have found difficult so far in Media and what has been your least favourite task. What skills do you think you need to practise?

5)            Write a new blog post entitled ‘My Photo Shoot shopping List’ where you write down all the props and costume that you need for next week’s photo shoot. What camera angles will you use and who is going to be your model? What pose will they be in?
